Crafting Experiences in Immersive Media: A Case of Tilt Brush View Digital Media

Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Minhyoung Kim

This study focuses on an emerging landscape of craft and its relation to immersive media, particularly virtual reality (VR) technology. The study examines the materiality of immersive media, specifically how immersive technology affects the traditional way of material implementation and introduces a new way of materiality through ‘virtual craft’. I incorporate three key literature reviews: immersive media studies, materiality studies, and triadic semiotics, to construct an integrated conceptual framework for measuring experiences and aesthetics in immersive making culture. In this study, I use Tilt Brush, a popular VR art application, as a case study to explore the experiences and aesthetics of immersive making culture. Overall, this study highlights the potential for immersive making culture in VR and its ability to transform traditional art forms into immersive experiences. The study suggests that the future of immersive media lies in the development of more advanced immersive technologies that can enhance the materiality and haptic feedback of virtual craft, as well as the integration of immersive making culture in various fields, such as education and entertainment.

Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Kamma Kshamarpna Babu

Blogs, wikis, online social networking, virtual worlds, and other kinds of social media are all included under the umbrella term "new media technologies." To begin, we provide a variety of potential approaches to the question, "What is new media?" We then take a closer look at and discuss the Five C's, or communication, collaboration, community, creativity, and convergence, as they pertain to the emergence of new media technologies. Finally, we look at how new media is being use in a variety of fields. Scholars and teachers interested in learning from and contributing to this discipline will find this overview to be an invaluable foundation.

Benefits of Training Arab Investigative Journalists on New Media Technology View Digital Media

Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Khalil Almabrouk

This study explores the benefits that can accrue to Arab investigative journalists through exposure to training in new media techniques to compensate for the poor level of basic education on this type of journalism provided by media faculties in Arab universities. Therefore, this topic is of a great importance to drawing the attention of journalists to the value of theoretical and practical training on the use of new media techniques in investigative journalism. It also contributes to placing the knowledge related to these benefits within a specific cognitive framework that paves the way for creating a theoretical framework on the issue which was studied in detail using qualitative research based on conducting in-depth email interviews with twelve journalists from six Arab countries. The study concludes that training investigative journalists on the use of new media technology helps in: developing their technical skills, improving cognition and knowledge, raising professional competence, improving content, enhancing competitiveness, and strengthening relationships.
