The Role and Importance of Professional Journalists in the Digital Media Environment: In the Light of the Idea of Trust and Social Expectations

Abstract

In the digital age, people expect media content to be tailored to their personal needs and convenience. Media repertoires are personalized. At the same time, in the fight to maintaining an audience (and market position), media create content for a specific audience, defined by algorithms and information tailored to his expectations. Consequently, the use of content in the media space becomes very fragmented and personalized, and social dialogue does not take place on a social scale, but in groups of people with similar views. In addition, rapid distribute, various interpretations and reconfiguration of information mean that content users are not able to cope with all the flow of content reaching them, as well as have no competence to verify them. Social media were supposed to help in this process. They were to help the audience free themselves from “elite guards” - including journalists. Platforms that rely on user-generated content and algorithms that support them pretend to be publishers. The question arises about the role and importance of professional journalists in the digital media environment. Moreover, modern society is a ‘risk society’, which is associated with the growing importance of trust. The analysis is based on the idea of anticipative trust based on the assumption that individuals (media users) will take actions oriented towards other (professional journalists) based on the belief that the behavior of journalists will be beneficial from the point of view of the interests of media users, their needs, and expectations.
