Enhancing Writing Skills for Public Relations Students: An Experiment of Service-learning for a Blindness and Visual Impaired Disability Awareness Project

Abstract

Service learning, is an educational method that have been proven to create many desirable academic outcomes. This study provides the empirical data to support the claimed benefits of the service-learning. In this research, during a two month period, a longitudinal experiment was conducted to test the effect of Service Learning projects on the writing skills through the social media marketing for a Blindness and Visual Impaired Disability Awareness Project, as well as some limitations of this practice on student outcomes. For this purpose, the content of a social media marketing campaign written by students for service learning projects was evaluated and compared to those in traditional projects. The results indicated that service-learning projects can positively impact students in improving writing skills and enhancing the understanding toward disadvantage community. However, it was also found that service learning might not a favorite tool for students with inflexible timetable. Base on that result, this experiment suggests that a service learning component can be added to writing courses.
