NGO and Agenda Setting on Human Rights: The Case of UN Watch on Israel-Palestine Issues

Abstract

UN Watch as an international NGO has an important role in raising human rights issues, including the Israeli-Palestinian case. It is not only in the UN session, but also in global public opinion. With the slogan of Monitoring the United Nations and Promoting Human Rights, UN Watch is dedicated to protecting human values and equality upon which the organization was founded. UN Watch is often vocal in raising human rights violations with various issues, but not vocal in human rights violations related to Israeli policies in Gaza and the West Bank. This is not surprising, since UN Watch has strong ties with Israel and Judaism. When many UNHRC member countries voiced Israeli human rights violations in Gaza and the West Bank during the United Nations General Assembly, UN Watch carried out the red herring through its delegation. The vocal intervention has been viral in online media and some mainstream global mass media. What remains questionable is whether UN Watch playing double standard on Palestine human rights issue along with other agenda? The significance of this paper is to critically analyze and assess agenda setting by UN Watch regarding Palestine issue in global environment. UN Watch doesn’t have the voting rights on UN resolutions in the case of Israel-Palestine, but it can effect global public opinion on Israel.
