Communication Challenges in a Technology Led Environment: An Exploratory Study in the Indian Context

Abstract

Technology is indeed a double edged sword. On the one hand it has enabled speedier and wider communication, expanding the scope, depth, and reach of communication, both at the personal and professional level. However there is a larger question: Is it being used as an aid for facilitating communication amongst individuals and groups or is becoming a villan of the system by enhancing the addictive and dysfunctional personality traits in individuals and organizations as a whole? The term ‘digital toxification’ is now seen as a threat to healthy interpersonal transactions. Increasingly and especially amongst GenZ (those born between mid 1990 to 2000) as well as the youth. Studies have indicated an increase in the sense of loneliness and loss of personal worth and self esteem due to the addictive nature of usage linked with mobile phones, television, and other modern technology led communication devices in the US and other countries. The paper explores this issue with respect to the Indan market given its large demographic dividend quotient and the penetration of mobiles and other technology oriented devices. The Indian study seems to confirm the global trend in terms of its impact and effects on people, organizations and relationships by affecting the quality and substance of personal communication and rasing concerns on how to address the challenges due to to the overuse of technology in modes of personal and professional communication
