ISIS Depiction by the New York Times Under Donald Trump Administration

Abstract

This research applied a content analysis method, by collecting data from The New York Times, through the LexisNexis database. The goal of this research was to identify how ISIS was depicted in the Times during the first two years of Trump’s presidency, while also addressing the president statements about ISIS. The research applied both human and computer coding to analyze the data. The study established a codebook that guided the finding of this research. This research is vital for several reasons. First, most Americans rely on media sources to get their news. About 20% of American adults receive news through newspapers (Pew research, 2016). Therefore, it is essential to study and analyze the transparency of the media’s content by examining one of the most read newspapers in the United States (Gielow, 2015). Second, this research offers a specific perspective because it focuses on different factors, like the depiction of Trump and ISIS through the lens of The New York Times. Also, the research data is fundamental because it concentrates on a crucial time in the life of the ISIS organization. The findings of this study add a new perspective that will contribute to future research.
