Regulation and Public Policy in the New Economy: Digital Media and the Future of Democracy

Abstract

The Internet and the web have given us globalization 3.0 and with it an urgent need to create multinational agreements on regulations and public policy on the new media or risk seeing democracy as we know it wither and die. Today for example social media has little or no policies regarding news or often fake news, privacy, transparency or accountability while the old media is atrophying and reinventing itself. Nation to nation there are many differences regarding the growth and development of the online world which is now permeating every aspect of life and work. The world has shrunk to a size tiny as author Thomas Friedman has put it, but the need for regulation worldwide has ballooned. Global problems are crying out for global solutions, which we will consider in this session.
