Representation of Women in Pakistani Dramas as Stereotype

Abstract

Stereotypical representation of women in dramas and films has been discussed and debated widely across the globe, but this topic remains relatively untouched in the context of Pakistan. To fill this gap and break the ice, this study offers a comparison between the stereotypical portrayal of Pakistani women in Pakistani dramas and their position in society. After the emergence of feminism in the modern times, Pakistani society is still portraying women as feeble, inferior gender and their roles are only kept in few selected characters in dramas, despite the fact women are taking part in every profession and working side by side with men in real life. Dramas continue to portray them as a weaker sex and often as victims in society. This research reviews the portrayal of women in dramas with comparison to society that is the reality of women whether Pakistani drama portrays that or not.
