ISIS Operation of Cyberspace in Iran : Telegram Case Study

Abstract

From the very beginning, the Islamic State has taken advantage of cyberspace to recruit, train, and organize. Among the articles and the vast amount of information available from the “Islamic State” group, ISIS has been considered less widely using telegraph social network. The data and writings used in this paper are derived from two groups of telegrams (menhajtoheed / Ansar) caliphate and two (Nahavand / Amaq News channels) of the Islamic State group. Data collection was done using the Nethnogram method. In this particular case, due to the lack of individual and group interviews with individuals and members of the Islamic State, members of these telegram groups typically do not provide information to the reader for specific purposes, and in the result of the information is more reliable. This position helped us to deepen the data. To analyze the data, we used Ernest Laclau’s discourse analysis and Chantal Mouffe’s ISIS discourse. Based on the analysis of the discourse of these two telegrams and the two news channels and analyzes of ISIS, we reviewed marginal discourses. There are those who fight for hegemony and the “Islamic State” group cannot be fooled. By studying the course of ISIS’s development, we find that there is a possibility for marginalized groups in ISIS. If discourse presents itself in such a way as to fit into the current conditions, it may gain hegemony and even strength.
