The Quintessence: Communication Politics between Science and Media

Abstract

I am an artist and theorist exploring image archives, found photography and film, the cultural lexicons of research and collecting from an anthropological point of view, stressing the links between visual imaginary, their narrative potential and their contexts of production and reception. Following these interests, I am developing a Phd project at Kingston University, UK, called “The Quintessence” that considers scientific visual imaginary in relation to space exploration, with a focus on how scientific discoveries are communicated and spread to the wider community. I am considering how much “political” science can be, how we can read scientific statement as political, how much human nature and cultural backgrounds influence the elaboration of scientific theories and what are the constrains faced within the scientific communities in terms of censorship, philosophical or ethical concerns. I am proposing to realize a presentation of my research, inviting everyone to take part in the discussion. Together we will explore how political and scientific communication have been shaped the history of our civilization in the past decades.
