Media and Feminism: Analysis of Gender Challenges in Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) Camps in Nigeria

Abstract

Gender challenges have become a major issue of discourse in Nigeria. These have become prominent following the increased social dislocation occasioned by Boko Haram insurgency, Fulani herdsmen attacks and political crisis in nearby Cameroun. Consequently, vulnerable women and children have been resettled in IDP camps. The ugly experiences they encounter and the associated implications namely, sexual abuse and the associated health hazards, social pregnancies, hunger and malnutrition, loss of access to educational opportunities, psychological stress associated with family management, among others are very worrisome. IDPs in Nigeria are the products of forced movement from ethnoreligious persecutions, particularly in the northeast and north-central zones of the country, to safer havens. This problem has become worrisome especially when considered against the great number of people, particularly women that have so far been displaced. Statistics show that above 2 million people, majorly women and children have fled their homes to seek refuge in IDP camps as a result of these attacks. How far these issues have been addressed by newspapers in Nigeria is what this study intends to investigate. Two prominent Nigerian national newspapers were purposively chosen for content analytical study of the above issues. Both continuous and constructed week sample of articles published over a 12-month period from January to December 2017 will be studied using agenda setting and framing theories, known to shape public understanding of social issues and ultimately influence them to make decisions. This will enable a proper appreciation of the issues under study and the way forward.
