Newsroom Editing Under Digital Convergence: Taking the Disaster Communication in the Youth Daily News for Example

Abstract

The Youth Daily News (YDN) is one of an official newspaper published by ROC government, which was established in 1952. The purpose of YDN was arming the ideology of military officers and soldiers, strengthening the mental combat power in the early years and was published in the military units only. After the organization reforming and the ban of newspaper industry in early Taiwan, YDN is now publishing to the public in purpose of responding to the policy of “the Openness of National Defense Information” and the promotion of “National Defense”. In order to face the trend of “Digital Convergence”, YDN also started the program of Digital Editing Center to conduct online news, social media services…, etc., engaging into Digital Transforming these years. The study examined the disaster news reported about the 2018 Earthquake in Hualien, Taiwan by the scope of digital convergence via in-depth interview, discussing how the process of news production assigned and the changes of the journalists’ routine under “Digital First Newsroom” to face the challenges of “Digital Convergence”.
