Communication jobs in Bangladesh : Core Competencies Sought in Communication Professionals

Abstract

The study aims at taking a stock of the core competencies sought from communication professionals as evident in communication job descriptions in Bangladesh, and their hierarchy in term of demand. The study will explore the job descriptions of all the communication jobs advertised in Bangladesh media during the study period and tally all the soft and hard skills required, prepare a comprehensive list of the skills, and arrange in hierarchy in terms of importance from most sought after to the least. The study will also look at the skills in terms of degrees of importance attributed to the specific items, whether they are sought as compulsory or optional. Both quantitative and qualitative data analyses will be performed. The data from the job descriptions and job specifications will be coded and tabulated using MS Excel, and the relevant graphs will be generated. The study will allow communication schools to further investigate to what extent the knowledge and skills the students are trained in actually match the core competencies required for meeting the skill demands of the jobs.
