Interactive Storytelling in Convergent News: The Case of Tribune Labs

Abstract

This paper examines digital narratives of online news in Pakistan, an age where media landscape is being remade by convergence. It tends to problemitize the relationship between interactivity and audience interests. Amongst the mediums of convergence, does one have preference over the other? The paper tends to measure the impact of Tribune labs stories through focus group study. Interviews are used as the basic methodology to get an insight into how data visualization is compassed. Is there a universal rule of interactivity that applies to all the stories or does each story in the online sphere cater to its own set of rules? In the age of convergence one has to be a quality information gatherer and an effective storyteller at the same time. Express Tribune is a very popular news platform among the youth. Not only is their newspaper more attractive than the competitors but also their style of narrative and interactive web stories lead to well-rounded news. In an age where breaking news is the hot selling news, interactive storytelling tends to give an alternate platform to the readers who want more than the breaking news all the other organizations are offering. This news lies in between the hard and the soft news.
