Femininity Representation on Indonesian movie in Post-Colonial Era : A Semiotics Study of Usmar Ismail’s “Tiga Dara” (1956)

Abstract

Women representation on a film has a boundless influence by ideology and politics. There was a representation of family on the Indonesian post-colonial era portrayed on the movie of “Tiga Dara” (1956). The story consists of three girls that identify as siblings that have been living in the post-colonial era. Indonesian post-colonial especially 1950s has been viewed in association with other eras. As a time of unproductivity of New era’s government and a prelude to chaos and in contrast to order and development before Reformation era. The portrait was captured as perception on femininity representation at the era. Women representation had constructed by the filmmakers and explored based on the three female main casts. This research used Christian Metz semiotics theory, worked with was, therefore, arbitrariness, motivation, code, and iconicity. This research is also expending mise-en-scene approach to explore the visual semiotics. An aspect of the women representations of colonial inheritance consisted of costumes, figure behavior, norms, and a set of social practices and attitudes, which included amongst others distrust towards society.
