Narrative Technique Free Indirect Style in Some Selected African Novels

Abstract

The study examines the Narrative Technique Free Indirect Style also referred to as Represented Speech and Thought in some selected African novels written in English. An examination of African novels reveals that this narrative style is employed by African novelists. As a linguistic tool useful for literary text explication, the style of narration is discussed at a lower level for language scholars particularly ESL scholars touching on such issues as mode of narration, point of view and instances of FIS passages in the selected texts. The study proceeds to isolate relevant passages of the narrative style from the selected texts for analysis and description and show how the style has been used for character portrayal and for the realization of the themes of the texts. In the end, the study shows that the style has stylistic significance and it is also a veritable tool for prose text explication.
