Piloting a Project-based Interdisciplinary Capstone

Abstract

Students often complete their major studies in disciplinary silos with minimal opportunity to work across fields. Such collaboration is critical, however, in creative learning and for success beyond the college campus in solving complex real-world problems. Hoffman and Axson explain that fostering greater interconnections among the many disciplines is necessary for addressing the major issues of our day. Combining students from a variety of disciplines offers unique perspectives, experiences, and solutions far richer than a student working individually or even with students from the same major. Instead, many programs graduate students from partitioned programs who are then expected to participate and succeed as a member of, and potentially lead, multidisciplinary teams in their professional careers. To tackle this wicked problem, the authors embarked on a yearlong interdisciplinary capstone course that brought together Graphic Design and Communication seniors to develop multi-platform campaigns culminating in a public exhibition of their work. This project-based, interdisciplinary capstone set out to foster collaboration between students who have different knowledge and perspectives, equipping them to build broader networks for lifelong learning, work, and living. With the benefits of collaboration, also come difficulties. This paper provides a case study that examines development and implementation of the interdisciplinary capstone course and emphasizes common obstacles and practical takeaways that educators can use when developing their own interdisciplinary, project-based courses. Educators will gain practical knowledge and the tools to anticipate potential issues with course planning, management and communication, along with some ideas for dealing with these challenges.
