The Role of Social Media in Promoting User Understanding of the Value of the Environment : The Case of the of Iraqi-Kurdistan Post-ISIS War

Abstract

This paper discusses role of social media and new technology on promoting people and users to understand the value of the environment. The paper examines two social media tools. It examines Facebook and Twitter in Kurdish communities and provides an ethnographic account of their awareness, culture, and use of these two social media. The paper employs quantitative methods to gain in-depth information and data regarding the case of social media uses. Further, the paper uses the community of practice concept (COP) (Wenger 1998) in dealing with the online community and (Lave1991) in the context of higher education, students’ classes, learning, practice, and culture. Additionally, the paper applies a Personal Learning Environment (PLE) and pedagogical methodology in connecting with la earning process within their class and the use of social media tools in this respect. This paper combines COP and PLE with the school environment in promoting student learning about the value of the environment and ways to protect it. This paper focuses on the review of key research and literatures to encourage people to protect and gain knowledge surrounding environmental protection. Also, the paper explains the key connection between the COP and PLE concepts in regard to social media uses, learning process, and self regulation in the process of learning. Furthermore, the paper provides in-depth knowledge relateing to the pedagogical context in dealing with and using social media tools in the learning process
