Web-documentaries within Contemporary Russian Media Landscape: Mapping the Production of Web-documentaries in the 2010s by Russian Media Institutions

Abstract

The multimediatization of contemporary Russian media cannot be recognized properly without the analysis of web-documentaries, one of the most innovative web-journalism forms. The first project of this type was officially announced in April 2013. It was called “Sixteen Minus,” a web-documentary on early motherhood originated by the agency Russia Today, the hugest Russian governmental news agency. There were however some earlier examples, most notably “The Eclipse Days” dated 2012 which focused on the dramatic destruction process of the USSR in 1991. 2015 to 2017 might be considered the turning point since several media organizations, mainly on the federal level, are experimenting with the new format – ITAR-TASS, Chanel One Russia, FNR (Federation of the Independent Broadcasting), etc. Although web-documentaries still maintain the status of a marvel, wonder. This research maps and analyzes contemporary web-documentaries produced by the Russian media institutions and photo and video journalists in the format of private initiatives with the special focus on the visual structure of the analyzed projects.
