Debating Migration: Public Discourse and Digital Media in the United Kingdom

Abstract

This research is a study of how public conversations and debate about migration take place across digital media in the UK. Focusing on the practices of individuals who have built high profile identities through their contributions to this debate, it will examine the roles of both traditional and alternative media in facilitating the establishment of public arenas that enable this. Drawing perspectives from participants across the fields of political activism, journalism, academia, and the general public, it will look at the role of digital media as a tool for protest, political participation, and most significantly, agenda setting. The potential findings of this study on the practices, priorities, and potential influence of media active identities would contribute an important perspective towards understanding what is driving public opinion around migration in the UK today, and the implications of this on support for immigration policy and racial and religious tolerance.
