New Media and Cross-cultural Communication: Developmental Kaleidoscope

Abstract

The rapid development of new media has been the main force accelerating the trend of globalization in human society as it is transforming communication across cultures. Cross-cultural communication involves the perceived crossing of a point of contact between cultures. It is the sharing of thoughts and ideas through verbal and nonverbal ways, resulting in the ability to create and cultivate relationships with individuals from differing cultural backgrounds. By its very nature, communication is cultural and must be considered in context or through the lens of the participants’ culture(s). New media has brought human interaction and society to a highly interconnected and complex level, but at the same time challenges the very existence of cross-cultural communication in its traditional sense. This study investigates how communication changes within media flows and how new media bridge cultural differences within a communication framework. To achieve the aforementioned, a combination of survey, content analysis, and data mining will be adopted for data gathering and analysis.
