Food as Emotional Expression in Wartime: Exploring Emotions in Gaza's 2024 Rescue Camp Food Reels on Instagram

Abstract

My paper analyzes the feelings communicated by Palestinians to the world through a critical discourse analysis of a random sample of 20 Instagram reels. These reels, published between March 28th and May 28th, 2024, feature food recipes made in Gaza’s rescue camps. I explore the communicated feelings through the following elements: Food recipes: I analyze how the choice of ingredients and preparation methods might convey emotions. Images: I examine how the visual presentation of the food, the setting of the rescue camps, and the people involved might evoke certain feelings. Audio: I explore how the use of voice-over, music, and songs contributes to the overall emotional message. Captions and titles: I analyze the language used in the captions and titles to understand the intended message. Additionally, I utilize sensory perception theory to analyze the emotions linked to the visual presentation of the dish, the ingredients, and the potential physiological needs driving the creation of these recipes within the context of the rescue camps.
