American Food and Its Flavors of Diversity: Can Pineapple Pizza Solve Racism?

Abstract

I research how immigration and slavery shaped what is today known as American Cuisine. I ask if a white person is able to cook authentic soul food. What defines authenticity? What’s the difference between traditional vs. authentic vs. local food? When is it cultural enrichment and when is it stealing? Does food fusion enhance cultural diversity or is it more important to preserve culinary traditions? When does food fusion become cultural appropriation? Who determines what’s food culture anyway? Is food a medium for connection and cultural exchange? How can food be a unifier and a bridge to cultural understanding?
