Association between Vitamin D Levels and IQ

Abstract

Vitamin D plays an important role in brain development through various mechanisms. Vitamin D has an anti-inflammatory effect on the brain, and also helps regulate transcription to express a number of Vital genes play a role in brain development. As there are controversial findings on vitamin D deficiency and IQ levels, this review aims to summarize available evidences in this regard. Databases including PubMed, MEDLINE, EMBASE and Web of Science were searched through September 18th, 2023. Vitamin D can control excitability and nerve circuits with a function similar to neurosteroids, which is also called “fne-tuning” of the nerve circuit. Vitamin D is thus thought to be an important determinant of memory, cognition, and behavior. They also control toxic effects in the brain through the production of calcium-binding proteins and preventing calcium from entering. Vitamin D is part of a large family of ligands. At the beginning of its action, 1,25(OH)2D3 binds to the vitamin D receptor (VDR), a member of the nuclear receptor family. This vitamin also interacts with nuclear receptors such as testosterone, estrogen, Thyroid and vitamin A signal. Some of these pathways play an important role in brain development. Few pre-clinical studies report that vitamin D deficiency has strong effects on IQ levels. Vitamin D protects the brain during inflammation, regulating the transcription of a large number of genes and play a role in brain development. More clinical and pre-clinical studies are needed to assess the effect of vitamin D supplementation in brain development.
