Abstract

The paper considers the cooking culture related to Muslim women in Aligarh. It is an inquiry into the health and sustainability potential in the attitudes of women towards food. It involves case studies of many issues that connect women to food. It studies the tools, cultural beliefs and motivations that make up the complex relationship between women and food in Aligarh. The overall objective of highlighting these findings is to improve on understanding of food practices and how they hinder or promote food sustainability. The paper also explores ways in which food related practices can be improved or enhanced to contribute to reducing climate related issues. Incorrect disposal of kitchen waste has a negative impact on climate and could be harnessed for a variety of benefits related to women’s physical emotional and economic well being. If we take an example- what kind of oil is used for cooking and how is it procured? Women need to be enlightened about the issue of sustainability in oil consumption. In India where multinational companies sell branded and unsustainable cooking oils. Women need to be made aware of local oil producers in villages and the need to buy from them. Thus the paper looks at ways to improve the sustainable relationship between women and food in Aligarh.
