The Emerging Securitization of Food as a Human Security Issue: A Case Study of Food Insecurity in Cameroon

Abstract

The problem of food insecurity is now a human security issue and has hit the world particularly Africa. The Sub-Sahara African, the Horns of Africa, the Sahel are the most affected areas of food insecurity This has become a global challenge and as such needs an urgent attention. Agriculture remains the largest employment sector in most developing countries and Cameroon is not an exception. Food production and access has never been a problem in this part of the globe except in the Northern parts where the climate is favorable to only a limited variety of crops such as maize. More than 60% of the country’s population is involved in agricultural production, however, 32% are still vulnerable to food insecurity. Meaning that there is still a lot to do to enable Cameroonian food policies to meet food security. The methods used was a cross functional study design and participants that was conducted across some localities in the Southwest, Northwest and Far North regions. There was also the qualitative approach which enables the natural unfolding of experiences that was also used for the studies. In this paper, I analyze the causes of food insecurity, then brings out the consequences and also examine the measures that should be put in place to combat food scarcity. Lastly, I suggest recommendations and conclusions as the way forward.
