Food as Medicine in Yucatan, Mexico

Abstract

Traditional Maya Medicine in Yucatan relies upon local plant resources, many of which are also edible species grown in house yards. This study examines the contemporary and colonial uses of those edible flora in treating common medical ailments, and also how these uses relate to the concept of the hot/cold dichotomy which is present in both European and Maya systems.
