The Gukbap Effect: Sukyeong Huh’s Sense of Hunger and Narrative of Gukbap in Global Blues

Abstract

As a sign, each national food closely connects the collective unconscious to unique historical experiences and social norms and thus contributes to the configuration of a distinctive cultural identity. In this respect, this paper looks into the late poet, Sukyeong Huh’s narrative of Gukbap in Global Blues and tries to shed light on how a very common folk dish unfolds a specific network of emotions and feelings and connotes a distinctive poetic style and aesthetic sensibility. Considering that Huh belongs to a Korean symbolic system, distinguished from the Japanese and the Chinese, it would be fascinating to examine how differently Huh reveals a unique socio-psychological sentiment of having no place to call home and attempt to restore a sense of ‘being herself.’
