Corporatization of Indian Agriculture: Challenges and Issues

Abstract

Agriculture is an important sector of the Indian economy. It is the primary source of livelihood for about 55% of India’s population. It contributes 17.5% to the nation’s GDP. During the COVID-19 lockdown Indian agriculture could provide a lifeline to the common people. Corporatization of agriculture is a very crucial issue for India today. Three new agricultural laws (now repealed) were announced by the Government of India in June,2020 claiming to expand farmers’ marketing options and increase their income. The farmer’s organisations raised MSP issues during the protest against the laws, simultaneously raised issues of subsistence status, infrastructural and institutional deficits, in addition to impact of climate variations, insufficient facilities of food storage and less contribution to the country’s GDP. The COVID experience exposed urban based structures and development model, the people are more suspicious to corporatisation. The present study analyses the impact of corporatization of agriculture on rural societies who could keep themselves safe during pandemic while urban structures became miserably failed.
