Local Food System Resiliency in Conflict and Disaster

Abstract

Maintenance of local food systems becomes critical in times of conflict and disaster. In an effort to assist military and civilian leaders in maintaining food systems during conflict and disaster operations, a Department of Defense research effort, using a case study within the Hudson Valley of New York, has developed a systems-based model and data system that identifies and maps entities within local food systems and the links between entities that combined can maintain system functions. The objective of the research effort has been to provide military and civilian emergency managers with guidance on where to allocate resources to support normal system function during times of conflict and disaster.
