From Everyday Food to Superfood: How Açaí Berry Went Global

Abstract

The aim of this work is to investigate how açaí berry, a grape-like fruit native to the rainforests of amazon, largely consumed by the ribeirinhos (river people) as part of their daily diet went global, reaching not only the aisle of supermarkets in the USA but also healthy restaurants and fitness centers worldwide. This paper concentrates efforts on analyzing its nutritional values, its socio-economic and cultural role for the people living in the amazon river basin, as well as its sustainability implications. Consumed pureed in every meal it ended up in urban centers all over brazil where it gained reputation as a superfood, being high in omega fats made it popular among sports practitioners, the boom spread and in the year 2000, Sambarzon, an American exporting company was responsible for the berry to go global. The economic and socio-cultural consequences of açaí berry fad is a significant matter to understand.
