The Gourmet Landscape in Colonia Roma Mexico City : The Trajectory of Urban Planning and Food Social Practices

Abstract

Within the social changes in eating behavior, the gourmet phenomenon stands out as a social practice. This is a category in which social anthropology provide observations on food consumption and behavior. As well as the forms of knowledge about social signs and signals of the groups that participate in this feeding system and spaces creations in which these forms of social life are activated. Gourmet as a social category is framing forms of knowledge and cultural exchanges that belong to complex systems of collective life.Human interactions around the gourmet phenomenon are framed through economic transactions,communicative acts,and various forms of symbolic and material exchange. Within this category, languages ​​and rituals are reproduced in a space of the metropolis. Finally, they are cultural expressions in the ways of consuming food, creating a landscape of modernity composed of people and places. The gourmet category is observed from a field work in a bakery. In practice, various components of cultural expressions and collective life forms are activated through symbolic exchanges and knowledge that do and say something about social forms that are triggered within an ecumene in which the process of production distribution and consumption are involved. That conform social times and particular social spaces,that are activated by the agency of the people. The ecumene in Colonia Roma Zone is understood as the cultural envelope that creates an atmosphere, an environment, habitat of meanings.That they have been built over time,generating a landscape to which social actors are integrated in a social envelope of nostalgia.
