Abstract
Religion and spirituality have been used by people as a tool to cope with challenging life situations, especially in dealing with health issues, illnesses, and disabilities as they serve to act as sources of hope, comfort, and strength by helping people overcome their fears and achieve ultimate control over their lives. One such life challenge is pregnancy where stressful events and fear of obstetric complications make pregnant women vulnerable and susceptible to psychological disorders such as anxiety and depression. This study aimed to understand how Muslim pregnant women use religion and spirituality in Pakistan during the pregnancy period to cope with pregnancy-related medical complications and ensure safe delivery and their child’s protection. This research used a phenomenological research design using in-depth interviews to gain insight into the religious and spiritual coping strategies used by Muslim pregnant women in Punjab, Pakistan. The data for this qualitative research were collected from 18 pregnant women by using a semi-structured interview guide. The participants of the present study reported using religion to cope with pregnancy-related vulnerabilities by offering Nawafil and Salah (prayers), recitation of Quranic verses, or the use of a rosary. The spiritual coping strategies reported by study participants included praying at shrines, wearing amulets, and giving Sadaqah/alms (Money) to the poor. Women in Pakistan use religion and spirituality to cope with pregnancy-related medical complications. Religious and spiritual practices offer comfort and hope to Muslim women during the pregnancy period by addressing their insecurities and vulnerabilities.
