Group-centered Spiritual Groups
Maddison Frye
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Leadership styles and methods greatly impact how groups function and their effectiveness. Group dynamics are also dependent on the application of the leader’s style, meaning either individual, group, or organizationally centered. Leader-centered leaders can be characterized based on the active and imposing role of the leader over the group. Group-centered leaders, in contrast, may be identified by the promotion of group discussion and growth in which information is exchanged between members. This paper analyzes 1 Corinthians 3:5-9 using socio-rhetorical analysis to identify the main message of the text and show that there is a sacred text example of group-centered leadership in a spiritual group. Overall, spiritual leaders should consider using group-centered leadership to promote unity and purity in their religious and spiritual groups through self-directed methods. This involves using a hands-off facilitating approach by enabling followers with the necessary tools for growth. This paper illustrates how the sacred text demonstrates the place of group-centered groups in religious congregations, how they should function through hands-off leadership, and the value of this method for members of the religious community.

Respecting, Ensuring and Promoting Migrants’ Right to Religious Freedom so as to Achieve Their Social Integration?
Núria Reguart-Segarra
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Human beings move and, along with them, so do their religious beliefs and practices. Indeed, the religious traditions of people who migrate tend to represent a nuclear element of their identity hallmarks in which they find a point of community connection. Religion catalyzes migrants’ social belonging through the establishment of links within communities of believers, in which they find a respectful space that welcomes them and brings them closer to their countries of origin. Their religious freedom, both individually and collectively, is therefore a key right that emanates from their own human dignity and which they must fully enjoy in order to feel that they are an integral part of the society that receives them on equal terms with national citizens. The pluralism on which advanced societies draw depends on this, that is, on a real integration of migrants in the host society that involves the acceptance and recognition of the particularities and values of the newcomers, thus overcoming outdated assimilationist strategies capable of halting social progress and tolerance for diversity. The relevance of attaining this implies a real challenge for both public authorities and all the other social actors. Based on the above, this presentation aims at assessing the effectiveness of migrants’ right to religious freedom in the selected states and whether respecting, ensuring and promoting it might actually contribute to achieving their social integration, by mainly taking into account the two major obstacles observed: governmental restrictions on religious freedom and social conflicts and discrimination based on religion.

The Camino de Santiago is a pilgrimage route that leads to the shrine of the apostle St. James in Santiago de Compostela, Spain. As both a space and an activity, it has always represented an evolving reflection of religious practices and human needs. Even today, it serves these purposes, although with varying degrees of emphasis on subjective spiritualities and the needs of different groups. The focus of my doctoral research is to explore the current utilization of the Camino by a specific cohort of present-day pilgrims defined by age and gender, aiming to identify commonalities in their beliefs. My paper examines how the Camino functions as (1) a rite of passage and a site of transition, (2) holds an anthropological link through the use of ethnographic method and methodologies of movement, and (3) has elements of a psychological investigation, given that life transitions often require coping and management strategies, of which undertaking a pilgrimage is one expression. Furthermore, my doctorate investigates religious transformation and the ways in which new forms of religiosity manifest. Sociologists have recognized the third age (50-74 years old) as a transitional phase in life. By focusing on this age group, my research delves into how the Camino pilgrimage supports men navigating their life passage issues and how they interpret various aspects of their experiences through the lens of subjective religiosity. Although my thesis is framed within ritualistic and identity theories, the study employs a fieldwork methodology centered around movement, which serves as the foundation for this paper.

Bagḍwāl worship is a traditional ritual performed in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand, India, which venerates the deity Jītū Bagḍwāl. The ritual is believed to safeguard crops, livestock, and village territories from potential harm. It involves the recitation of a folk ballad recounting the story of Jītū Bagḍwāl and his kin, accompanied by various forms of ritual actions such as drumming, dancing, singing, sacrifice, and possession. The essay documents the significance of Bagḍwāl worship and its deep-rooted cultural and religious significance. It is not only a means to seek protection and prosperity but also an expression of communal bonding and cultural identity. Furthermore, the artistic elements that are part of the ritual are not just for entertainment but also serve a deeper spiritual purpose. They facilitate the worshippers to enter into a trance-like state, in which they become possessed by the deity, coupled with drumming and narration by the bards, which plays a central role in the ritual action of worshipping Bagḍwāl. This essay advances our comprehension of the continuing importance of rituals that reinforce the active participation of deities in everyday life in the Himalayan little traditions.

Theological anthropology has often revolved around questions of parts, like how many (e.g.: monism, dichotomism, trichotomism) and which (e.g.: soul, body, spirit). While these questions are essential, they tend to evince a metaphysical prioritization of space over time. However, as creaturely beings, we know no such thing as space without time, substance sans event. This reality, I argue, is apt for theological anthropology, and invites an approach to the problem of human persons by way of space and time. I therefore propose the category of movement—along with the classical categories of soul, body, and spirit—as germane to the work of defining humans’ basic composition. Dionysius the Areopagite enumerates three soul-movements which I demonstrate as aptly organizing the human person’s event, so to speak: inner, lateral, and vertical. According to Dionysius, these soul-movements are caused by the Good and Beautiful, “the source, the origin, the preserver, the goal, and the objective of rest and motion,” (705B) and are akin to that of divine intelligences, which are like that of God. In this way, the soul-movements are part and parcel of the imago Dei. Locating human identity not only in her parts but also in these movements—which are spheres of relation—we rightly elevate the telos of the imago Dei to its proper place: not only in her likeness with God but by way of and for the sake of communion with God.

Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
In this paper, my focus is on power dynamics and the competitive discourses within the Shiite community in the Gulf region, as manifested in the Arbaeen Walk. I define the Arbaeen Walk as a collective Shiite ritual with multiple layers, experienced as a sociocultural carnival by the masses, and serving as a sphere of power conflicts among Shiite discourses. To analyze these layers and power dynamics, I employ Bakhtin's theory of the carnivalesque, Reicher's theory of cooperation, Stuart Hall's theory of representation, and Foucault's discourse analysis. Specifically, I concentrate on Iraq, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain, which are significant countries in the Gulf region, and explore the power relations among different discourses within this context, as well as their representation in the Arbaeen Walk. Methodologically, this research is based on the analysis of available data from primary research, various articles on online news platforms, and available surveys such as Arab Barometer.

Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
This interdisciplinary paper meticulously explores the intricate connections among terrorism, political extremism, and religion, employing an in-depth analysis of case studies to unveil the nuanced dynamics at play. By drawing on historical, sociopolitical, and religious contexts, I critically examine specific instances where these elements converge, shedding light on the factors contributing to the genesis and perpetuation of extremist ideologies. This study delves into four specific cases: the clash between Irish Republicans and Unionists (1969-1998), Boko Haram in Nigeria (2002-present), far-right extremism in the United States (2016-present), and the Sri Lanka Easter Bombings (2019). Each case offers a unique lens into the varied manifestations of religiously motivated terrorism, illustrating how historical grievances, socio-economic disparities, and religious narratives intertwine to fuel acts of violence. Particularly, I explore the pivotal role of religion as a catalyst for radicalization and recruitment within extremist groups. Through a detailed analysis of the narratives employed in case studies, I seek to unravel the psychological processes driving individuals toward violent ideologies rooted in religious fervor. This scrutiny contributes to a deeper understanding of the ideological underpinnings that render religious beliefs a potent force within the realm of political extremism. By examining real-world scenarios, the aim is to clarify how geopolitical dynamics contribute to the rise of radical ideologies infused with religious dimensions.

Zen Buddhism and Social Theory in the United States
Siddhesh Mukerji
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
This paper shares findings from a recent qualitative study with 35 leading Zen Buddhist social activists in the United States. This research used a social constructionist grounded theory methodology to explore how its participants conceptualize and approach social action from the standpoint of Zen Buddhism. Participants in this research explicitly and implicitly discussed how Zen in the present-day USA integrates, adapts to, and critiques current social theory. For example, some participants viewed social theory as a demand for Buddhism to adapt beyond its historical tendencies (e.g., feminism requires Buddhism to reckon with its legacy of patriarchy). Other participants spoke in terms of social theory to describe the broad soteriological project of Buddhism (e.g., collective awakening in Buddhism necessarily includes a collective awakening to the ills of systemic oppression, including racism and colonialism). Participants also shared Buddhist critiques of social theory (e.g., Buddhism offers a way to acknowledge systemic oppression without falling into demonizing forms of identity politics). By examining this conversation between Zen and social theory–especially in a time and place of intense social-political divisions and crises–the findings of this study demonstrate how religion absorbs and influences the social discourses that surround it.

Christianity is often wrongly linked with colonial history, overshadowing its indigenous roots and diverse expressions. This misconception simplifies the faith as a relic of white domination, ignoring its rich history and cultural adaptability in the country. To correct this view, it's essential to explore the various traditions of Indian Christianity, emphasizing their contributions and distinctiveness since the first century. Through this research I uncover Christianity beyond its colonial associations, focusing on cultural integration. I present a more accurate picture, highlighting Christianity's integral role in India's diverse religious landscape and challenging the notion of it being solely a product of white faith. Christianity in India is as old as Christianity itself. Christians are accused of Forced conversations and anti-national sentiments and therefore become prey to Social Stigmatization. They are denied religious rights and are discriminated against in employment and education. There are instances of violence against Christians, including physical assaults, vandalism of churches, and disruptions during religious gatherings. These incidents are often fueled by religious intolerance and prejudice. I will present the historical, social, and political contexts that contribute to allegations against Christians, while simultaneously exploring counterarguments by the Christian community. By investigating specific cases, legal precedents, and socioreligious dynamics, I provide a nuanced understanding of the challenges faced by Christians in India. In conclusion, I explore how theological perspectives on hope influence the Christian community's response to persecution, and how these responses interact with the policies and governance of the current government.

Shmita Rebalance
David Krantz
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Beginning as the ancient Israelites thousands of years ago, the Jewish people were mostly farmers and shepherds practicing sustainable development according to the edicts of the Torah, the Hebrew Bible. Over about two millennia of exile, however, Jews were unable to practice their land-based traditions tied to their holy land. But the dawn of modern-day Zionism in the mid-to-late 19th century and the subsequent return of Jews to their homeland in what is now Israel has allowed Jews to revive the sustainable-development practices of indigenous Judaism. This paper explores shmita, the biblical sabbatical year at the heart of Judaism’s sustainable-development ethic, showing that today’s so-called modern innovations — such as fallowing, polyculture and rewilding — are effectively incarnations of millennia-old agricultural practices of rest built into indigenous Judaism that rebalances the relationship between humanity and the Earth, demonstrating a utilitarian value that complements the intrinsic value of preserving ancient traditions. As humanity seeks climate-adaptation strategies, indigenous Judaism offers the restful practice of shmita.

Trauma Informed Spiritual Practices
Jesse Eugene Herriott
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Trauma informed spiritual practice embraces the viewpoint that participants in small communities of learning and development such as faith communities, schools, religious institutions, and families have different needs. In a post-COVID society, research has shown that anxiety has seem to risen to all time highs in America. What may be equally true is more people are finally becoming aware that engaging the world requires an understanding of the needs of the communities one may find themselves belonging to. Touch, hugs, and direct contact in interpersonal relationships within communities should be re-examined to include a strong awareness of consent at the initial point of contact and throughout the period of engagement- from hello to goodbye. The likelihood of triggering unwanted feelings of anxiety and social awkwardness forces additional self-regulation in an extroverted world are strong, even though hugs, direct conversation both in person and through indirect, and normal greeting exercises have been considered appropriate methods of engaging known and unknown individuals. COVID protocols have sparked a new interest in how to engage communities in a world where the variety of psychological experiences and trauma are diverse. Therefore it is essential to explore the personality and psychological needs of the individuals that make up a community at the onset of the initial encounter, regardless if there is a common relationship between those that are attempting to conduct a standard greeting.

Navigating the Complex Terrain of Freedom of Religion or Belief in China
Charles Ho Wang Mak
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Freedom of Religion or Belief (‘FORB’) represents a cornerstone of human rights, as acknowledged in international legal instruments. However, its practical implementation displays wide variation globally, owing to distinctive historical, political, and cultural contexts. This paper presents a critical exploration of FORB within China, a particularly intriguing instance due to its multifaceted religious landscape and its intricate interaction with religion. While Western dialogue often highlights reports of religious persecution within China, the actual situation yields a more sophisticated narrative. Despite significant constraints, there exist spaces of relative liberty and tolerance. This paper employs a nuanced model of religious accommodation to deliver a comprehensive, balanced perspective on FORB within the Chinese setting. The paper first scrutinises China's constitutional and legal framework concerning religion before proceeding to a series of case studies that offer empirical evidence about the state of FORB across diverse religious communities. By evaluating the relationship between religious freedom, individual autonomy, and societal welfare, the paper elucidates the unique challenges and opportunities related to FORB in China. The paper concludes with an assessment of the primary obstacles and potential strategies for FORB in China, including policy suggestions. This contribution seeks to augment the dialogue surrounding the convergence of law, religion, and society within the Chinese context. It is anticipated that this exploration will not only enhance understanding of FORB in China but also catalyse further discussion in this crucial field of study.

Bhakti Belonging
Khatereh Taher
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Since 1967, the International Society of Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) has been a leading force in spreading the path of devotion around the world. While ISKCON initially attracted North American youth interested in Asian philosophies, in recent decades, the South Asian diaspora have been sustaining the movement. However, existing scholarship has overlooked the impact of ISKCON on the lived experiences of the South Asian diaspora. This paper explores how ISKCON influences the perception of belonging among the South Asian diaspora in Canada. It offers a historical overview of this transnational religious movement and the place of first- and second-generation South Asian immigrants within ISKCON. Drawing on ethnographic data, it argues that feelings of home are a great contributor to understandings of belonging amongst members of the South Asian diaspora and their conceptualization of the space of the temple. It outlines three key elements that contribute to such feelings: food (prasādam), home programs, and deity viewing (darshan). Additionally, an analysis of ISKCON teaching materials underscores the centrality of belonging to God within the movement. Nevertheless, the concept of belonging manifests differently for individuals and is not always synonymous with a feeling of inclusion. Thus, this paper highlights blind spots within ISKCON that contribute to sentiments of not-belonging, embedded both within the physical space of ISKCON temples in Canada and ISKCON’s philosophy regarding themes of gender and sexuality.

Catholic Religious Tourism in the Iberian Peninsula
Claudia Ribeiro Pereira Nunes
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Like other tourism subgroups, religious tourism should be seen more in the current competitive environment, where the tourism and hospitality industries constantly search for new customer segments. According to Rinschede (1992), the tourism industry can inhibit a competitive relationship, where tourists feel they have no alternative but to compromise their spiritual beliefs in favour of a tourist experience. In this context, the research question is why young Catholics compromise their spiritual beliefs in favour of a tourist experience. To understand this special Catholic Religious Tourism experience for young people, the researcher interviewed fifteen young people (between 18-24) from Spain and Portugal who are participating in World Young Day (WYD), which will happen in Lisbon on August 1-6. Note that 12 will participate in WYD with a full week registration (235 euros), with everything included: food, accommodation, transport, insurance and WYD Kit. Three are volunteers. They will register with a discount and different price (145 euros). The researcher will re-interview them after the event at the end of the year 2023. The outcomes and findings show that tourism and religion should be complementary on World Youth Day (WYD).

Who Owns the Money That She Earns?
Farjana Mahbuba
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
This paper explores the phenomenon of spousal financial abuse among Bangladeshi migrant Muslim women in Australia, focusing on the contradictory role of religious narratives in shaping these experiences. According to Fiqh or Islamic jurisprudence, a wife's earnings belong exclusively to her, while simultaneously emphasizing the concept of ta’a or obedience to the husband as a marital right. This culture also reinforces the similar gender ideology of a wife’s obedience to her husband. This creates a dilemma when a husband demands control over his wife's income, as compliance would deprive her of her religious jurisprudential privilege to retain and manage her own money. Drawing on fieldwork, this study aims to analyse the concept of ta’a or obedience in the fiqh as a contributing factor to spousal financial abuse. By shedding light on the mechanisms that enable such abuse, particularly within the Bangladeshi Muslim community in Australia, this article seeks to contribute to a broader understanding of the complexities surrounding this issue. Ultimately, the findings emphasize the need for more empowering religious responses to support abused migrant women in breaking free from the cycle of abuse.
