Catholic Mission Documents, First Catholic Missionaries in Java and Pontifical Mission Societies of Indonesia: The Movement of Social Entrepreneurial Orientation

Abstract

This study seeks to illustrate the use of Social Entrepreneurial Orientation (SEO) in the context of the Catholic Mission. It draws upon Mission documents, the historical accounts of the initial missionaries in Java, and the activities of the Pontifical Mission Societies of Indonesia (PMSI). This study utilized qualitative approaches and a comprehensive methodology, incorporating action, phenomenology, and narrative research. The Pontifical Mission Society of Indonesia (PMSI) is an International Catholic nonprofit organization based in Rome and operates in 37 dioceses in Indonesia. Having a history that extends for more than a century, PMSI has been actively involved in fulfilling its objective. This study showcases the utilization of entrepreneurial tactics by missionaries in their missions. This is supported by an examination of the SEO guiding framework outlined in Catholic Mission documents, an investigation of the practices of early missionaries in Java, and in-depth interviews conducted with PMSI directors. This study provides both a theoretical contribution on search engine optimization (SEO) in religious nonprofit organizations and helpful information and insights for managers in similar nonprofit organizations. This study serves as a connection between prior research and the practical execution of the Catholic Church’s mission.
