Gender Dynamics of Spiritual Bhakti Movement: Akka Mhadevi's Efforts towards Inclusive Spaces

Abstract

The Bhakti saints, in the context of Hinduism, are known for their mystical fervor towards a specific divinity or the celestial. The inflexible caste system and the supremacy of ceremonial practices which crept in Santana Dharma, made religion unapproachable to the masses. The saints made spirituality accessible and inclusive for everyone, irrespective of social status or background. These saints articulated their mystical visions, wisdoms, and dedication through poetry, songs, and literature in regional dialects which were effortlessly understood by all. Many female saints like Mirabai, Muktabai, Kanhupatra, Andal, Akka Mahadevi, and others emerged as prominent figures, expressing their devotion and mystical understandings through poems and teachings. Mahadevi supported social reform, challenged discriminatory practices and ill-treatment of widows and advocated for social equality. She had to face innumerable challenges across the society but nothing deterred her from her goal. The paper is based on historical and analytical research. The sources used in the research are of multiple nature. The books by A.K. Ramanujan, C. R. Yaravintelimath, Alice Walker provide Akka-Mahadevi’s life, works, contributions to the Bhakti movement, diverse perspectives on spiritual philosophy, and implications in mystical realm. They offer valuable insights for exploring her teachings, the problems she faced and how she carved out spaces for women in the male-dominated society. The paper also highlights her significant impact on women, in past and present spiritual traditions.
