Religious Enthusiasm and Spiritual Insecurity in Africa

Abstract

This paper explores the sense of danger, doubt, and fear arising from uncertainty regarding managing relations with invisible forces and how forms of “enthusiastic” religion - modes of embodying the divine - thrive in contemporary Africa. It proposes an analytic framework of “relational realism” as a way of interpreting these religious movements without relegating them to mere emanations of “belief”.
