Online Church: A Solution to Difficulty of Building an Offline Church in Indonesia

Abstract

Church is too commonly imagine as a building shape with cross ornament inside or outside of it. Regardless, this paper describes the meaning of the church which has long been abandoned. Applying the theory from Mircea Eliade about sacred and profane with a description from Heidi Campbell’s book about Digital Religion and combining it with HKBP theology will give the formulation about church understanding more specific even though consider conservative or leave for a long time because the hegemony of church nowadays. HKBP Maranatha Cilegon is the main object as the example to see the reality that many churches in Indonesia still do not have permits for the building. Also, this paper describes how COVID-19 has increased momentum for revitalizing understanding and building the church in online worlds.
