Ethiopian Evangelicals' Group Dynamics and Its Impacts: The Religio-political Analysis of Small Group Ministry in Ethiopia

Abstract

This research suggests three fundamental hypotheses to understand the theoretical framework to understand the impact of grouping on the Ethiopian evangelical church: first, Ethiopian evangelical Christianity since the fall of the Derge regime, been attracted and infatuated with large groups settings and the mega-church model, which is weakening the church and resulting in a deficient church comparable to the quality of the pre-Communist Ethiopian Church; secondly, the contemporary Ethiopian Evangelical Christians are highly interested in technological-friendly groups and small group ministries that are targeted to the needs of the modern generation and will produce many believers that are mature in their faith; thirdly, Ethiopian Evangelical Churches can benefit from the application of existing computing technologies as an effective means of enhancing small group ministries to reach, disciple, and equip the next generation with biblical standards and values. The practical application of this will be with a central office being established to organize and monitor networks of churches working in a technological friendly Small Group Ministry. This will be implemented with a commonly accessible website, a Social Media bridge, such as Facebook/Messenger, a 24/7 toll-free mobile support and alike. The stakeholders for this project will be the 13 local churches around Kolfe area who are legally registered as Alliance of Churches in Kolfe. Once this pilot project proves itself to be successful, it will be carried out in a larger scope for several other churches in Ethiopia and beyond. The outcome will be a strengthened Christian commitment and practice in Ethiopia.
