A Conceptual Application of Peace and Tolerance Based on the Teaching of Prophet Mohammed : Reanalysis of Selected Religious Texts

Abstract

Prophet Mohammed’s community in the city of Medina has witnessed a unique life experience, where members of the Prophet’s community were united in a religious bound (brotherhood and sisterhood) in God. This spiritual relationship has created a secure and peaceful society to the extent that Omar bin Al-Khattab, who was appointed as a judge in the era of the Caliph Abu Bakr, at a time wanted to resign from his post because there were no reported disputes or crimes that warranted solution. However, the fraternity ties between Muslims have experienced a gradual decline over time, especially in the present era in some of Muslim countries, where hatred replaced values of love and forgiveness because of misunderstanding of some of the legitimate religious texts, as a result, in some occasions, hate escalated to killing incidents. Prophet Mohammed’s statements (hadiths) are embedded with a lot of values that have and still can play an important role in promoting and solidifying fraternity and peace among people in society. This paper aims to shed light on some moral and social values that can be derived from certain human behaviors such as: value of smile, value of good neighborliness and value of fraternity with a new understanding that can help spread peace and tranquility in society. These values were taught by the Prophet Mohammed to strengthen ties of brotherhood among members of the Muslim community and to protect them from committing any kind of misconduct that can lead to the destruction of these social ties.
