Abstract

The purpose of my reflection is to contribute to the study of the presence of friars preachers in the region of Galicia in the first half of the thirteenth century by means of a case study. To do so, we will analyze the Legend Beati Petri Gundisalvi (LBPG), which tells the life, wonderful deeds and death of the Dominican friar Pedro González, better known today by the name Telmo. Although it has already been the subject of some studies, there are still many doubts about the LBPG production process. Moreover, in spite of the lack of documentation on the mendicant presence in the north-west of the Iberian Peninsula in the first decades after the founding of the Order of Preachers, this work was not analyzed with the intention of articulating its production to the connections established between lay preachers and secular clerics in the region. In my work, I present arguments that seek to maintain that although Pedro González has worked in several localities in Galicia, the writing of this hagiography is connected to the relations established between the Cathedral, the Cabido, the Concello and the Dominican friars in the diocese of Tui in mid-thirteenth century, of which the Legend is a unique testimony.
