Abstract
Rudolf Otto, German theologian and scholar of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, first conceptualized numen and the numinous experience. While this conception does – at least theoretically – apply to all religions, its application has largely been limited to discourse regarding Judeo-Christian traditions. I submit that the pragmatism of this conception is translatable to Hmong culture and religion in its respective diasporic existence in North Carolina. This paper examines Hmong ritual through the lens of Otto’s theory of the numen. This research seeks to establish Hmong ritualistic expressions as numinous experiences.
