Inter-Religious Harmony: The Remedy to Communal Violence in Myanmar

Abstract

High tensions between Buddhists versus Muslims and Buddhists versus Christians in Myanmar have been the cause of so many armed rebellions and communal violence. The initial small domestic inter-religious disharmony in the country has now become the international concern. The main purpose of the research is to identify the far reaching negative impacts of inter-religious disharmony in ethnically and religiously diverse society of Myanmar. Identifying the social damages inflicted by inter-religious disharmony in the country is essential to understand the need of inter-religious harmony for peaceful coexistence and constructive relationship in the Myanmar society. How inter-religious conflicts and communal violence can be avoided by means of inter-religious harmony to bring about peaceful coexistence and constructive relationship in Myanmar. This paper will demonstrate how religions in the ethnically and religiously diverse society must be aware that peaceful society depends on the approach each religion makes to the other in the society. I will point out a consistent historical evidences to support my claim of inter-religious harmony to be the cause of communal violence and enhance the fact that inter-religious harmony is the only remedy to it. Inter-religious harmony has the power to liberate and free Myanmar society from different kinds of communal violence. I will be using references from primary and secondary sources including many eyewitness accounts, sources available on the internet and many research and analysis papers and books on history to prove my analysis.
