Work Boundaries of Emotional and Social Labor in Hybrid/Remote Work

Abstract

The study examines the blurred boundaries of hybrid/remote work in organizations on emotional and social labor. The data consists of a longitudinal dataset of three questionnaires conducted in a consulting company in Finland in autumns 2020 (N87), 2021 (N94) and 2022 (N75). The analysis utilized a multi-method research framework in which background variables were examined quantitatively and responses to open-ended questions were analyzed using qualitative thematic content analysis. The respondents’ experiences and observations related to hybrid/remote work guided the analysis. Prolonged remote work may affect well-being and coping at work. The study found that the ways in which boundaries of work blur transformed during long-term remote work, which may have an impact on workers, management and organization, and working life.
