Abstract
National data of Pakistan in education shows that enrolment of male students is decreasing particularly at higher level of education in public and private sector institutions. Though higher education includes Bachelor level to Ph.d level in all disciplines but during this study only education discipline comprising on mostly teacher education programs such as Associate degree, B.Ed four years and Master of education at university level were delimited. For exploring the causes of this phenomenon this survey study was conducted. Objectives of the study were: (i) to find out the factors affecting the enrollment of male students at university level. (ii) To examine the opinion of faculty members about low enrolment of male students at higher level of education. (iii) To examine the impact of this decreasing enrolment on national development. Existing study was descriptive and through survey method causes of low trend among male students towards higher education particularly in teacher education programs were explored. For this purpose 100 students and 50 faculty members from ten most populous universities of Pakistan were selected as sample of study. For data collection five point Likert scale questionnaire was used. Data was analyzed through Mean score. On the basis of data analysis it was found that mainly factors such as unemployment, low salary packages, financial responsibilities of families and favoritism for female students in institutions caused to decrease the male enrollment. Hence for increasing the trend of enrollment of male students more job opportunities, attractive salary packages and motivational campaign were mostly recommended.
