Resilience of Online Platforms during the COVID Crisis: The Case of Airbnb

Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Calin Gurau

Resilience represents an important topic of investigation both in organizations and in interorganizational networks such as supply chains, being often achieved and enhanced through specific crisis management initiatives implemented by the focal organizations in relation to its stakeholders. The originality of our study stems not only from investigating resilience in an unprecedented context - a global pandemic, but also in relation to its subject, as the number and characteristics of relationships established between an online platform and its stakeholders are significantly different in comparison with those developed in independent organizations or networks. Using a combination of secondary (documents, reports, professional and academic papers) and primary (interviews with stakeholders, direct observation) data, we identify, analyze and discuss the specific crisis management actions implemented by Airbnb during the first wave of the COVID pandemic, in 2020. These actions are categorized and linked to the specific temporal periods that have marked the evolution of the pandemics. The resilience-enhancement outcomes of these initiatives are discussed and interpreted in relation to the performance of Airbnb platform and the opinion of the main category of stakeholders.

Agility as Dynamic Capability in the Supply Chain

Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Rafaela Alfalla-Luque,  Darkys E. Luján-García,  Juan Antonio Marín García

Supply chain (SC) agility has become an order winner that could determine the firm survival. An agile SC quickly responds to short-term changes in demand or supply. Companies need to constantly scan the environment to react and adapt to changing customer needs. Previous literature confirms that there is still relatively little research focus on the impact of SC agility on performance. This is an important gap, as SC managers need to know the impact that can be expected from the implementation of practices that promote SC agility. The present paper develops a meta-analysis focused on the relationship between SC agility and performance to provide new evidence by critically analyzing and quantitatively synthesizing the results of past research. It provides a quantitative synthesis of research findings from multiple studies to draw comprehensive and valid conclusions. A systematic literature review has been developed drawing on the main databases (WoS and Scopus). A total of 62 papers have been sampled and analyzed considering substantive, extrinsic, and methodological moderators (Meta-Essentials). Preliminary results confirm a positive and significative correlation, but none of the analysed moderators has enabled the identification of any significant differences by subgroup. The results help researchers to address new studies on this important topic. Several best-practice recommendations are also given to develop well-reported papers. Practitioners obtain useful information about the consequences on performance of the implementation of SC agility practices in different sectors and type of countries.

An Analysis of the Outcomes of the Supply Chain Alignment Dynamic Capability

Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Enrique Bayonne,  Juan Antonio Marín García,  Rafaela Alfalla-Luque

Supply chain (SC) alignment refers to the ability to share responsibilities and roles, information, and incentives and to coordinate and synchronize activities and processes. An aligned SC is more efficient and effective, reduces costs, and improves results. However, only a limited number of studies exist that address the effects of this dynamic capability and few analyze and assess its influence on performance, which is the purpose of the present study. A systematic literature review was developed using the WOS and Scopus databases followed by a bibliometric analysis (R Bibliometrix package) and a meta-analysis (Meta-Essentials). A total of 36 empirical studies were selected and coded for the meta-analysis with over 8,000 firms in the manufacturing and service sectors included in the sample. The main preliminary results indicate, first, that there are significant and positive correlations between SC alignment and performance; second, the influence of the used moderating variables (industry, country context, type of performance) is not a determinant of the correlations, and third, due to high heterogeneity, more well-reported studies are needed to analyze this influence and develop theory on this topic. The implications of this study are useful for researchers as it offers new developments in this field by providing insights based on the empirical data reported in previous studies. Future lines of research are identified for advances to be made in the field focused on the detected gaps. For practitioners, important knowledge is obtained about the impact of the implementation of SC alignment practices on performance.

The Opportunities and Challenges for Indonesian Decentralized Local Governments in the Globalization Era View Digital Media

Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Dea Alita Marsanty

Globalization has been inevitable by the increasing use of technology which allows people and goods to travel across borders, easier, faster, and cheaper. The only way for a country to take benefit from globalization is to give greater autonomy to the regions inside the country to allow them to manage their own economic resources. However, decentralization comes with its own opportunities and challenges. This paper argues that there is no single formula that fits all local governments. Each local government still needs clear direction, clarity in leadership, budget accountability, and transparency to optimize the benefit of globalization for the welfare of the people.
