Platform Organizations: New Dimensions in Orgnization's Design and Structure

Abstract

The concept of a platform for formation of new enterprises has been around through thousands of years; from the Silk Road to the Interstate Highways to Apple and Alibaba. The design of and structure for an organization has had its development over the last century; from a hierarchy to a modular network. However, the emergence of platform strategies by leading IT organization has now created a vacuum that cannot be filled with the traditional structures. The three major components of a platform architecture are the platform itself, the complementing stakeholders (those who provide mutually beneficial product or service to the firm owning the platform) and the modular interface between the platform and the compliments. The key is the existence of a core competency (the platform itself) which will dictate the design of an organizational structure for success. Within the evolution of this concept, the organization as a whole will evolve into a platform itself where the traditional functional areas are no longer an integral part of the structure. The new design will take the shape of an structural; components needed only to maintain and advance the core competency(ies). .
