Interactivity, Multimodality and Education: A Study about Reading Exchange Groups in Wattpad

Abstract

With the constant expansion of information exchange, digital communication technology has become intertwined with contemporary society. Today’s reality offers us the opportunity to access cyberspace anytime, anywhere. What we call hypermobility has changed the way we relate to one another. The inherent human nature of sharing and interaction is enhanced and mediated by information and communication technologies. These interactive resources are prevalent on social networks and the internet and are characterized by aspects of interactivity. The changes brought about by digital technologies are also impacting the field of education, and as students engage in cyberculture, it is urgent for education to adapt to these new conditions. Wattpad is a social writing platform that allows for the self-publication of fiction or non-fiction works, enabling dialogue between readers and authors. While it is a digital and collective platform that does not have explicit learning objectives, the interactions that take place there are often knowledge-generating and can serve as a facilitator for language teaching. This study analyzes the interactive characteristics of reading exchange groups derived from Wattpad and their effects on English language teaching. This paper draws on master’s research titled “Interactivity on the Wattpad social network: an experience in English language teaching,” which is immersed in a qualitative Pedagogical Intervention that revealed how students have a multimodal nature in their text production processes.
