Active Learning and Student Engagement in Higher Education: Strategies for Enhancement

Abstract

Active learning and engagement of students in the school programs is an important determinant of school quality. A host of factors contribute to create an enabling environment within school and in the classroom to enhance students’ participation in both curricular and co-curricular activities. Research studies have revealed that cognitive, social, and emotional engagement of the students in the teaching and learning process enhances their learning outcomes and also improve creativity, communication, collaboration and critical thinking. Teachers have a significant role in designing, developing, and implementing the relevant curriculum with learner-centered approaches for effective learning. This paper highlights and explains the concept of active learning and engagement with the theoretical framework and elaborated on the ways and means to practice in the classroom processes. The paper also presents the different constructivist approaches that are relevant to classroom practices.
