The Digital Literacies Laboratory: Critical Thinking and Design in a Brazilian Peripheral Public School

Abstract

The Digital Literacies Laboratory Project (LABDIGI) presents four action dimensions: (1) teacher education from the perspective of social justice; (2) digital inclusion with a focus on the Pedagogy of Multiliteracies; (3) curatorship of multimodal resources; (4) production of physical and digital educational resources. In the public school that hosts the project, we organized a learning environment suitable for the proposed activities where we developed Literacy Workshops and Digital Creation Workshops with children from the first to the fifth school year. These actions are aimed at overcoming educational inequalities that already existed, but were deepened by the suspension of face-to-face classes due to the COVID 19 pandemic. We prioritize learning the alphabetic system, reading and writing in Portuguese, while we collectively build a teaching methodology aimed at developing knowledge and skills related to digital meanings making. The LABDIGI project constitutes the field of participatory action-research on the teaching of literacy in a neighborhood crisscrossed by social inequalities. Our partial results indicate that the interweaving of conventional and digital literacies favors the development of situated language skills and favorably impacts learning in the early grades of elementary school.
